Taxman- This song is a good story and misguided anger at the poor tax collectors who do not write these tax laws. It may be somewhat of a pop song inserted in for a wide audience. George shows that he can hang with Lennon, Ringo and McCartney and is starting to add another style to the group with songs with political or social meanings (10/10)
Eleanor Rigby- This is the kind of symphony and the connection to an audience. It contains trippy references and stuff that pretty much anybody would like. It is very agreeable to my ear. "All the Lonely People, Where do they all come from"? This makes me think of a person sitting in a really populated place, sitting on a bench looking at all the people coming to and fro, not sad himself, but looking at the people who are close physically, but do not interact more than that. This is not even a reason of the people, in a city you just cant interact as we used to in smaller villages. (10/10)
Im only sleeping- This is nothing more than sitting in your bed, at like 8Am and wanting to sleep in. You just want to go to sleep, take a break and just go to sleep. This song is striagh John Lennon, Hippy and 60's. I could imagine this coming out and many of the kids listened and relished that going back to sleep. You cannot even explain it, you have to just have someone wake you up earlier than usual. Then they will ask, "Do you like that John Lennon song, Im only sleeping.
On another note, Lennon was very busy and must have been really enjoying sleeping in a rich persons bed.
And on another note, this song is itself hypnotic and self hypnotizing in a way. The Beatles were themselves some of the best true musicians in the industry and they made there own style, for one reason, because there was nobody who could tell them different.
I am a marketing consultant and these guys are not pursuing the path that most talent-less entertainers need, good marketing. The Beatles were not trying to drop songs for the want of money. In some cases I guess monetary greed is trumped by a rare circumstance where an 4 anomalies happen to be born together. This is a John Lennon song, it shows the different styles of the Beatles. (10/10)
Love You To- The use of Indian instruments is obvious to any Americans ears. The hypnotic and symphony like quality of everything makes you relax just by listening to it. "Make Love All Day Long". How could you not like that, who does not like sex? They are not saying bitch or hoe, it is "Love", which is some pretty good sex! (10/10)
Here, There, Everywhere- This is the soft spoken lyrics that will put a baby to sleep if tired, but interested in the simple beat and is one of the better representations of 60's love. It makes me sad to think that a lot we live in such a different world. This song also shows the how good McCartney can sing. (10/10)
Yellow Submarine- This is the first song that I ever listened to by the Beatles that somebody showed me. I thought the Beatles made gay, weak and pop music. "Do you want to hear a song that basically explains what you just said (I forgot what I was talking about, that he referenced) and I said, "sure". We all live in a Yellow Submarine, the Earth is the submarine, it is yellow due to unknown reasons, but it is very weird and monotonous. The Beatles could make a good song out of any weird sounding lyric when read on paper. This song also is the start of a lot more drug influenced work by the Beatles. (10/10)
She Said She Said- This is another happy song talking of interactions with a romantic girl. "She said... I know what its like to be dead" speaks of some pain she endured, but by the tone of the melody of the song, she must feel better in the presence of another. It reminds me of playing games in high school with woman. It is puppy love at its best in this song. (9/10)
Good Day Sunshine- This is a waking up song that again reflects the innocence and high standards of the time. This song is perfect for starting a trip to work. The feeling of this song is so much the airy and spacey feeling of the 60's. The culture of easy going and free love makes me think the Beatles went around singing this like a Disney Movie with other people jumping in as they make their way through their daily activities. The Middle class lifestyle of the British at this time remind me of this. (8/10)
And Your Bird Can Sing- A very symbolic and indirect song. The continued mood of optimism and do good is still present, but the Beatles were obviously changing what it even meant to be conventional. This song was a changing from the direct "Baby, Baby" songs to more meaningful and obtrusive Beatles Songs. The experimentation in songs like this one are key to good music. this is wholly new to my ears and has the distinction of being great, something common on Beatles songs. (8/10)
For no one- The Beatles often would step int another genders shoes and tell stories like this that seem so real and known to be personally. The thoughts that go through our mind become their lyrics. the most common denominator in many situation is picked perfectly by the Beatles. The meaning found in the lyrics is different for many people, this song reminds me of the fighting, separation and decay of a relationship. "In here eyes, you see nothing" speaks of the separation of a relationship, the moment when you know it is over. (8/10)
Dr. Robert- This is a direct reference to drugs and a dope-man. Dr. Roberts is a symbolic reference to somebody who can give you something to feel happy. The experimentation of the time with medicine, drugs and other mind altering aspects gave birth to songs like this. The central figure of Dr. Robert is important, he is a drug-dealer and therefore the drug users happiness depend on him selling them drugs. (7/10)
I want to tell you- This is a trippy song in an early form. The confused piano and harmony of the voices over one another give this a very mellow feeling. The feeling of ease and relaxation come partly from the soft voices, but the words are reassuring, it is speaking of not caring, communicating without the usual barriers that prevent us from sharing our mind. The lazy feeling of the hippy era is so strong here, the communication of that is clear through the ages. (9/10)
Got to Get you in my life- This song is another one speaking of the comfort of a good woman. The Beatles were excellent at feeling the common connection we have for the opposite sex and our reliance on them for a happy life. We are reluctant to place our hearts so tenderly in the hands of another, the Beatles and this song make you freely want to open yourself. They were not concerned with what people thought of them or their music, they wrote about the things in life that excited and pleased them,. (6/10)
Tomorrow Never Knows- This is one of my absolute favorite Beatles songs, and songs in general. "Turn off your mind, Relax and Float Downstream" is a direct command to relax your mind, enjoy and absorb the music and simply revel in the order and sound of it. The perspective of the Hindu religion seems to be strong in this song. The constant change of life, the reincarnation and connection of everything is so strong. Lennon was rumored to be on LSD when reading a Hindu book before writing this. The transcendence of the ordeals and principles that hes studied have taken their audio form in this song. As soon as it opens up, even though it is the last song on the album, it seemed to solidify the future of trippy music and experimentation that the Beatles were so good at. Nobody heard a song like this before it came out, the Beatles invented a genre with this song. (10/10)
Overall, I think Revolver is an important album in the transformation and creativity of The Beatles. they seemed to mature a lot since their earlier albums and were starting to really differentiate themselves. Lennon went on to write a lot more trippy songs and McCartney went on to write even more romantic and mature love songs. The band was so young to start off with they never had time to really grow up in ways, but this album shows that they were on control of their music. Revolver is easily one of the best albums of all time and will be at the forefront of musical history books in the future, it is truly a work of art from a great time period.
